Welcome to the DTM Home Page!
The festival is an exciting time for all DTM students. Every year we have state of the art sessions that explore subjects in design, technologies and management --including new design techniques and tools, career opportunities in technical theatre, tips for creating the ideal portfolio, stage management practices, how to get into grad school, plus an introduction to free design software. This year we are planning new and exciting sessions for Designers, Technicians, Stage Managers, and Allied Crafts practitioners.
There is also the Design, Technologies and Management Exhibition, an opportunity for students to share their set, lighting, sound, costume, stage management and allied craft with theatre professionals and fellow designers. Projects are presented at the Region I festival to a panel of professional guest respondents. The respondents will choose the recipients for national and regional design awards, plus honorable mention accolades for notable work regardless of entry level. Design awards in Region I are given at both the national (associate or participating productions) and regional (paper projects) levels. At the national level one student from each design discipline and stage management is invited to bring their exhibit to the National Festival in Washington, DC.
The festival is also an opportunity for hands-on experiences. There are the Tech Olympics, an event where individual students race against time and show their prowess in skills such as knot tying, hanging and focusing a light instrument, and reading a ground plan. Full festival scholarships are open to students interested in serving as technical interns. Stage Managers are encouraged to submit applications for the National Stage Manager Fellowship and an opportunity to serve as a stage manager at the regional festival. There is also the Educational Expo, a gathering of the latest technology and equipment. In the past we’ve had representatives from such businesses as ETC, Barbizon, and ALPS, FOCAL Press and Rosco displaying their latest products.
Announcing the FOCAL Press Rafael Jaen Show Case Award: Focal Press has created the Rafael Jaen Show Case Award, dedicated to students presenting their work for the first time as a regional entry at the Design-Technology and Managements exhibit at each KCACTF region. The award honors design substance and innovative ideas and is meant to inspire young DTM practitioners encouraging their learning in the Design, Technologies and Management fields. Award recipients receive a FPRJ certificate, a Focal Press credit to purchase three (Focal Press) books of their choice, and an opportunity to have their work represented at the USITT Conference as part of the KCACTF Digital display. The award is for regional entries rather than the national Barbizon and KCACTF entries.
