Welcome Student Dramaturgs!

New and exciting happenings are being added to Region 1 Dramaturgy for Festival 43.

DIVE IN!

Students can sign up to be guerrilla dramaturges when they arrive at the festival.

If you have worked as a dramaturg at your college during spring or fall 09 you will have opportunities to showcase your dramaturgy work, meet dramaturgy professionals, and have your work responded to for consideration of the LMDA/KCACTF National Award and the new ATHE/KCACTF Regional Award.

You are also invited to collaborate with student directors, designers and playwrights in “process” workshops and learning activities designed to strengthen skills and knowledge of the work of production and educational dramaturgs.

An excellent resource to learn about Dramaturgy and the responsibilities of a Dramaturg is the Dramaturgy Student Handbook on line at http://www.lmda.org/blog/LMDAMemberGroups/UniversityCaucus

This handbook was compiled by Region 1 Dramaturgy Chair, Magda Romanska, Ph.D., Head of Theatre Studies and Dramaturgy Advisor at Emerson College, Boston, MA.

Follow the links to learn about the student dramaturgy initiatives, criteria, guidelines and application process.Note the deadline for applications is December 7. 2009.Student dramaturges working with productions opening after December 7, 2009 are to submit electronic materials immediately upon the close of the production.

Please feel welcome to contact me with any questions, and I look forward to seeing you at the University of New Hampshire, January 26-31, 2010!

LMDA / KCACTF Student Dramaturgy Initiative (National Award)

The LMDA/KCACTF Student Dramaturgy Award is designed to recognize contributions by student dramaturgs to the conception, development and production of theater within their colleges and universities, or to educational projects in dramaturgy. The philosophical foundation of this award – like that of dramaturgy itself – rests in the belief that art benefits from examination on the parts of both artist and audience, and that creative inspiration accompanied by analysis and reflection is most likely to lead to productions and projects that fulfill the spiritual, social and personal potential of the theatrical event. Also inherent in the guidelines is the belief that the dramaturg should participate fully and uniquely in the collaborative act of making theatre and in promoting social discourse around the theatrical event.

This award is the result of a unique collaboration between Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas (LMDA), the professional association of dramaturgs and literary managers working in North America, and the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF), a national program dedicated to improving the quality of college and university theater in the United States, with additional support from the Association of Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE).

To validate the significance of the dramaturg's contributions – and to raise awareness of dramaturgy in the academic field – students must be nominated to participate in the regional LMDA/KCACTF Student Dramaturgy programs through a letter of nomination from a faculty member is required.  Three professional LMDA dramaturgs in each region will select the Regional LMDA/KCACTF Student Award recipient in Dramaturgy.

What the National Award Entails

The LMDA/KCACTF Student Dramaturgy Award recipient will receive a $100 cash prize, and one year's membership in LMDA paid for by KCACTF. Different regions may offer a variety of awards, including membership to ATHE.

Who is Eligible

Undergraduate and graduate students who work specifically as the dramaturg on a production or workshop, or who submit work created for a dramaturgy class. If the project is a workshop or production, the student must be credited as the dramaturg. A student who also writes, directs, designs, performs in, or otherwise collaborates on a project will be responsible for articulating the boundaries of the dramaturgical work and speaking on its behalf. The student need not be enrolled full-time to submit work for this award. Projects in most regions must be completed (plays closed, workshops completed, projects turned in) by December 1 each year to be eligible. Projects completed after December 1 may be submitted for this award the following year.

How to Apply

  • Fill out the application form, identifying the dramaturg and the project and including two statements written by the dramaturg
  • Enclose a letter of nomination from a faculty member. If you wish, you may include more letters of support from persons directly related to the project – collaborating artists or audience members for a workshop or production, or fellow students/teachers in a classroom project.
  • Submit three copies of the entire application packet to the regional coordinator. Please check the regional website to find the coordinator, and to see if the application form differs slightly. If you have questions about the National Award, please contact Mark Charney at cmark@clemson.edu

Award Criteria:

  • Distinctiveness: what is creative about the dramaturg's approach and/or analysis?
  • Contextualization: how is the production or project enhanced by dramaturgical analysis or research; alternatively, how is the academic project in dramaturgy imaginatively projected into a larger social, political, academic or artistic setting?
  • Impact: in what ways are the audience, artists or institution enriched by dramaturgical ideas and execution?
  • Ethics: how are issues that might be raised by the terms of the collaboration or changing responsibilities dealt with and/or resolved?
  • Significance: how does this project inform, challenge or advance the field of dramaturgy, in general and/or within the student's school?

Guerrilla Dramaturgy

Debuting at Festival 42 is Guerrilla Dramaturgy where student dramatrugs will receive a crash course in everything from production and educational dramaturgy, facilitating audience talk backs to theatrical collaboration to new play development – all in one activity. In cooperation with NPP, dramaturgs conduct research relating to a new play and then collaborate with playwright, director and actors on a public reading of the play.

Guerrilla Dramaturgs do not need to bring anything to the festival other than intellectual curiosity and a desire for an exciting collaborative experience. (A laptop is useful, but not required.) They will be given their assigned play the first night and will be part of that play’s production team for the rest of the festival. The research will be done at the University of New Hampshire, using the resources of the library. Guerilla dramaturges will also have ample time to participate in other workshops and festival activities.

Students can sign up to be guerrilla dramaturges when they arrive at the festival or use the on-line LMDA/KCACTF application form – CLICK HERE
