Welcome to Region 1 Dramaturgy. If you are new to Dramaturgy at KCACTF there are a number of ways to get involved at festival, including submitting your work for consideration for the national or regional awards, participating in professional development workshops, and working on new play development.
If you have worked as a dramaturg in class or on a production at your college in 2012 join us for the opportunity to showcase your dramaturgy, meet dramaturgy professionals, and have your work responded to for consideration of the LMDA/KCACTF National Award and the ATHE/KCACTF Program Note Regional Award.
You are invited to collaborate with student directors, designers and playwrights in process workshops and activities designed to strengthen skills and knowledge of the work of production and educational dramaturgs.
Experience page to stage! Sign up as a Guerilla Dramaturg for the festival and work on new play development. Dramaturgs will collaborate with playwright, director and actors on a public reading of a new play. You will be a script reader, part of the production team, and facilitate an audience talkback. LMDA / KCACTF Student Dramaturgy Award
The LMDA/KCACTF Student Dramaturgy Award is designed to recognize contributions by student dramaturgs to the conception, development and production of theater within their colleges and universities, or to educational projects in dramaturgy. The philosophical foundation of this award – like that of dramaturgy itself – rests in the belief that art benefits from examination on the parts of both artist and audience, and that creative inspiration accompanied by analysis and reflection is most likely to lead to productions and projects that fulfill the spiritual, social and personal potential of the theatrical event.
Also inherent in the guidelines is the belief that the dramaturg should participate fully and uniquely in the collaborative act of making theater and in promoting social discourse around the theatrical event. To validate the significance of the dramaturg's contributions – and to raise awareness of dramaturgy in the academic field – the Kennedy Center requires a letter of nomination from a faculty member.
This award is the result of a unique collaboration between Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas (LMDA), the professional association of dramaturgs and literary managers working in North America, and the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF), a national program dedicated to improving the quality of college and university theater in the United States. Additional support is provided by the Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE). Professional dramaturgs, members of LMDA who live in each region, will select the winner of that region's LMDA/KCACTF Student Award in Dramaturgy.
What the National Award Entails
Regional fellowship recipients will receive membership in LMDA, an all-expense paid residency at the National Festival at the Kennedy Center in Mid-April, and multi-day workshops with leading artists in both production and new play dramaturgy.
The recipients of the National LMDA/KCACTF Fellowships receive residencies with the O’Neill Playwrights Conference, The Playwrights' Center in Minneapolis and/or the Kennedy Center/National New Play Network's MFA Playwrights' Workshop in the summer.
Who is Eligible
Undergraduate and graduate students who work specifically as the dramaturg on a production or workshop, or who submit work created for a dramaturgy class. If the project is a workshop or production, the student must be credited as the dramaturg.
A student who also writes, directs, designs, performs in, or otherwise collaborates on a project will be responsible for articulating the boundaries of the dramaturgical work and speaking on its behalf. The student need not be enrolled full-time to submit work for this award, but we do encourage dramaturges to attend the regional festival to represent their works.
You must deliver your Dramaturgical Protocol to Festival, appropriately display the project, be prepared to give a 5-minute presentation on your work and receive response feedback in order to be considered for advancement to the national festival in Washington DC.
How to Enter LMDA/KCACTF Student Dramaturgy Initiative
Deadline for Application & Materials:
December 8, 2012
• Fill out the online application form, identifying the dramaturg, project, and faculty nominator.
• Include two statements written by the dramaturg, one describing the breadth and scope of the project and its challenges, the other detailing the process from start to finish.
• Include a letter of nomination from a faculty member. If you wish, you may include more letters of support from persons directly related to the project – collaborating artists or audience members for a workshop or production, or fellow students/teachers in a classroom project. But we only require one. This should be e-mailed directly to the Regional Chair.
• Include all materials that seem relevant, but not to exceed 100 pages. This may include emails between the director, the cast, the designers, etc and the dramaturg; pictures of the display; information from websites created; questions asked during the process; and information gathered for individual packets. We are not interested in your Xeroxing all that you researched, but in your analysis and compilation of materials researched.
•Submit the entire application packet electronically as a PDF file to Theresa Lang, Regional Chair of Dramaturgy at firstname.lastname@example.org.
As you decide what to include in your packet, please look over the Award Criteria below and choose the approach and materials that best speaks to these standards.
What is creative about the dramaturg’s approach and/or analysis?
How is the production or project enhanced by dramaturgical analysis or research; alternatively, how is the academic project in dramaturgy imaginatively projected into a larger social, political, academic or artistic setting?
In what way are the audience, artists or institution enriched by dramaturgical ideas and execution?
Ethics: How are issues that might be raised by the terms of the collaboration or changing responsibilities dealt with and/or resolved?
How does this project inform, challenge or advance the field of dramaturgy, in general and/or within the student’s school?
All student dramaturgs will be given table space, approximately 30 by 36 inches, to display their Dramaturgy Protocol. Please bring your own self-standing display board to include sample visual and textual materials used in the production.
Dramaturgy Protocol could include some (or all) of the following:
• Preproduction research (including library-based and internet-based scholarly research, textual and visual resources, literary criticism, primary archival research)
• Actors' Packets
• Director's Packet
• Actors Presentation
• Production Presentation
• Study Guides
• On-line websites created for the show
• Program notes
• Any kind of promotional materials that the dramaturg contributed to
• Lobby Display
• Outline of the Talkbacks
• Bibliography of sources consulted in the project
Make sure that all materials are clean, clear and concise. Materials should be free of spelling, punctuation, and grammatical errors. All source material should be cited using MLA format. Include a table of contents and label the materials.
The LMDA / KCACTF Student Award in Dramaturgy will be presented on the closing night of the Regional Festival.
Region 1/ATHE Dramaturgy Program Notes Regional Award
This event is for all student dramaturgs who wrote program notes during this festival year (Jan-Dec 2012). Please submit an original production program and attach a cover page including complete contact information for the dramaturg and the title of the production. Include 3 copies of the dramaturgy notes and send to the address below. Or scan and send electronically to email@example.com.
